40 weeks to race day: base season

Plenty of runway. This far out, the win is a boring, consistent base rhythm: aerobic volume, strength, technique. The structured block starts closer in; what you do now decides how high it can climb.

R
Recover
Fix the nervous system first. Sleep, HRV, and the noise out.
A
Align
Fit the plan to your actual life, not the one you wish you had.
C
Condition
Minimum effective dose. The right sessions, done fresh.
E
Execute
Race-week protocol, pacing, contingency. Nothing new on race day.

Building for this one? 70.3 training plan covers the sessions, the weekly shape and how the block is paced. The R.A.C.E. Framework explains why it is built that way.

Road to Race

Build my complete road.

Commit to the date and the work gets a shape: your countdown starts, the emails arrive in step with your build, and the app anchors a recovery-led block so the final week lands exactly on race day.

One confirmation email, then the road begins. Registering for the race itself stays with the organiser.

Already have the app, or want it? The app takes this race and builds the block around it.

“A hillier bike than the Provence postcards suggest, and it often gets hot. Fuel and cool early rather than reacting when you are already cooked.”

The race

Aix opens the European leg of the IRONMAN Pro Series, so the fields are strong. The swim is in the Lac de Peyrolles. The bike winds through Provencal countryside and climbs more than most people plan for. The run finishes on the Cours Mirabeau in the middle of Aix, which is one of the better finish straights in French racing. Expect heat by late May.

The course

No course map

IRONMAN publishes no route file for this leg, so there is no course map to draw from.

A rectangular loop of Lac de Peyrolles, which sits 20km outside Aix. The swim is not in the town you race the rest of the day in, so read the logistics carefully: bikes go down the day before and there is a shuttle on the Saturday.

One loop back towards Aix, mixing flat road with genuine climbing and the technical roads around Mont Sainte-Victoire. Technical means the descents cost you time if you are timid and skin if you are not.

Three loops through the middle of Aix, its parks and around the Rotonde fountain, finishing on the Cours Mirabeau. Town-centre laps, so you will pass the finish twice before you are allowed it.
