0 weeks to race day: the sharpening window

A full build no longer fits, but a sharp one does. This close in, the job is specificity and freshness: race-pace touches, open-water or brick rehearsal, and a taper your nervous system actually absorbs. No heroics; arrive fresh.

R
Recover
Fix the nervous system first. Sleep, HRV, and the noise out.
A
Align
Fit the plan to your actual life, not the one you wish you had.
C
Condition
Minimum effective dose. The right sessions, done fresh.
E
Execute
Race-week protocol, pacing, contingency. Nothing new on race day.

Building for this one? 70.3 training plan covers the sessions, the weekly shape and how the block is paced. The R.A.C.E. Framework explains why it is built that way.

Abraham Spring, founder of Unbroken

“A rowing course swim and flat closed roads. Almost no variables, which makes it a very good place to find out what your training is actually worth.”

The race

Duisburg is the German equivalent of a laboratory race. The swim is in the regatta course at the Sportpark, so it is flat water with no current and easy sighting. The bike and run are flat and largely closed. If you want a half distance where the course adds nothing and takes nothing away, this is a strong pick.

The course

Swim1.9 km
One lap
No course map

IRONMAN publishes no route file for this leg, so there is no course map to draw from.

The regatta course at Sportpark Duisburg, opened in 1935 and a venue for canoe and rowing world championships. Lane-straight, clean and easy to sight, which makes it one of the least stressful swims on the calendar.

2 laps

Two loops over the historic Bridge of Solidarity and along the Rhine towards Moers. Flat and fast, so a realistic personal best course, and the bridge is the only thing resembling a climb.

Run21.1 km
3 laps

Three laps along the regatta course through the park. Voted third best 70.3 run in Europe by the athletes who did it, which usually means flat, shaded and well supported.
