IRONMAN 70.3 Vilamoura-Algarve 2027
A new Algarve race opening the season. A marina beach swim, a one-loop bike through the countryside, and a two-lap run along the Quarteira promenade.
33 weeks to race day: base season
Plenty of runway. This far out, the win is a boring, consistent base rhythm: aerobic volume, strength, technique. The structured block starts closer in; what you do now decides how high it can climb.
Building for this one? 70.3 training plan covers the sessions, the weekly shape and how the block is paced. The R.A.C.E. Framework explains why it is built that way.

Commit to the date and the work gets a shape: your countdown starts, the emails arrive in step with your build, and the app anchors a recovery-led block so the final week lands exactly on race day.
One confirmation email, then the road begins. Registering for the race itself stays with the organiser.
“An early April opener in the region half of Europe does its spring training camps in. Ideal if you want a real race to sharpen an early season block.”
The race
The course
One loop off Vilamoura Marina Beach, sheltered behind the marina pier. Ocean water made calm by the breakwater, and in April it is cold enough that your first two hundred metres will feel worse than your fitness deserves.
A single loop through the Algarve countryside on quiet scenic roads. Rolling rather than flat, and April in Portugal usually means good conditions, which makes this a sensible early season target.
Two loops along the Vilamoura and Quarteira coastline with only two turnaround points on the whole course. Very few direction changes means very little rhythm break, so it is genuinely quick if you are pacing well.
Not yet confirmed for this edition: bike elevation gain, cut-off times, aid station spacing, water temperature history. We publish these only once they are on the official course page, so check there before you pace off anything here.
