39 weeks to race day: base season

Plenty of runway. This far out, the win is a boring, consistent base rhythm: aerobic volume, strength, technique. The structured block starts closer in; what you do now decides how high it can climb.

R
Recover
Fix the nervous system first. Sleep, HRV, and the noise out.
A
Align
Fit the plan to your actual life, not the one you wish you had.
C
Condition
Minimum effective dose. The right sessions, done fresh.
E
Execute
Race-week protocol, pacing, contingency. Nothing new on race day.

Building for this one? Olympic distance training plan covers the sessions, the weekly shape and how the block is paced. The R.A.C.E. Framework explains why it is built that way.

Road to Race

Build my complete road.

Commit to the date and the work gets a shape: your countdown starts, the emails arrive in step with your build, and the app anchors a recovery-led block so the final week lands exactly on race day.

One confirmation email, then the road begins. Registering for the race itself stays with the organiser.

Already have the app, or want it? The app takes this race and builds the block around it.
Abraham Spring, founder of Unbroken

“Do not build a season around this race until an organiser confirms it. If you wanted Dorney as a flat benchmark, put Windsor or a Castle Race Series sprint in that slot instead and keep an eye on whether this one returns.”

The race

Check before you commit anything to this one. F3 Events, who ran Dorney, posted a notice on their own site that the company has gone into administration along with The Race Organiser, AAT Events and Purple Patch Running, naming RunThrough Events as a possible successor. There is no confirmed organiser and no confirmed date, so the date shown here is provisional and the entry link goes to a site that is no longer selling a race. We have kept the page up because people search for this event and the useful answer is why it has gone quiet, not silence. If it does come back it will be worth having: Dorney was the control condition of British triathlon, a calm rowing lake swim, closed flat laps on the bike and flat tarmac on the run, which made it the standard first race and benchmark race for the whole South East.

The course

No course maps for this race. The organiser publishes no downloadable route for any leg of this race, so there is nothing to draw a course map from. Everything below comes from the official course page, checked on the date at the foot of this section.

Swim1.5 km
Lap count not published

The 2012 Olympic rowing lake: flat, clean, shallow at the edges and completely sheltered, which is why it was the standard first-triathlon venue in the South East. Historically Super Sprint, Sprint and Olympic distances.

Bike40 km
Lap count not published

Laps of the closed road alongside the rowing lake. No traffic and no hills, which made it the fastest and safest introduction to riding in a race anywhere near London.

Run10 km
Lap count not published

Flat laps of the lake path. Nothing about this course is difficult, which was always the point of it.

Not yet confirmed for this edition: whether the event is running at all, who the organiser now is, 2027 date, lap counts, distances for the current format. We publish these only once they are on the official course page, so check there before you pace off anything here.

Course details verified against the official Dorney Lake Triathlon course page on 14 August 2026. Courses change; the official page is always the last word.

Questions, answered

When is Dorney Lake Triathlon 2027?

Dorney Lake Triathlon takes place on 16 May 2027 (provisional: confirm the date on the official site before booking travel).

What distances can I race at Dorney Lake Triathlon?

Super Sprint · Sprint · Olympic. Pick the distance that fits your training runway, not your ego: the right distance is the one you can arrive at fresh.

How hard is the course?

Road terrain, flat profile with around 20m of climbing. As flat as Britain gets

What is the swim like?

Olympic rowing lake, clean and shallow-edged. Wetsuit-legal, usually 14–17°C. Practise open water before race week, not during it.

How long do I need to train for it?

Race day is 16 May 2027. For the olympic, a proper recovery-led build wants about 8 weeks, which means starting around 21 March 2027. Later starts still work: the block compresses honestly rather than pretending, and it always anchors to the exact race date.

How do I enter?

Eleven months of good work, then seven days of panic. Almost everything that goes wrong in race week is somebody trying to help themselves.
