39 weeks to race day: base season

Plenty of runway. This far out, the win is a boring, consistent base rhythm: aerobic volume, strength, technique. The structured block starts closer in; what you do now decides how high it can climb.

R
Recover
Fix the nervous system first. Sleep, HRV, and the noise out.
A
Align
Fit the plan to your actual life, not the one you wish you had.
C
Condition
Minimum effective dose. The right sessions, done fresh.
E
Execute
Race-week protocol, pacing, contingency. Nothing new on race day.

Building for this one? Ironman training plan covers the sessions, the weekly shape and how the block is paced. The R.A.C.E. Framework explains why it is built that way.

Road to Race

Build my complete road.

Commit to the date and the work gets a shape: your countdown starts, the emails arrive in step with your build, and the app anchors a recovery-led block so the final week lands exactly on race day.

One confirmation email, then the road begins. Registering for the race itself stays with the organiser.

Already have the app, or want it? The app takes this race and builds the block around it.
Abraham Spring, founder of Unbroken

“The hardest full distance in Europe, and it is the wind that does it, not the gradient. Do not chase a time here. Train your patience and your fuelling, and treat finishing as the win.”

The race

Lanzarote has humbled better athletes than any of us. The bike is 2,550m of climbing across an island with almost no shelter, so the wind turns flat sections into work and descents into concentration. The run is comparatively flat but lands on legs the bike has already emptied. From 2027 the race is run directly by The IRONMAN Group, ending a thirty-year association with Club La Santa. Come for the experience and the respect, not the personal best.

The course

No course maps for this race. IRONMAN publishes no downloadable route for any leg of this race, so there is nothing to draw a course map from. Everything below comes from the official course page, checked on the date at the foot of this section.

Swim3.8 km
2 laps

Two laps off Playa Grande in Puerto del Carmen. A sandy beach and usually calm water, which is the gentlest part of this race by a considerable margin.

Bike180.2 km
One lap

One loop, and the reason people come. Timanfaya National Park, La Geria and the Mirador del Río, starting and finishing in Puerto del Carmen. The climbing is significant and the wind is relentless and constant, which is what makes this the hardest bike course in the IRONMAN calendar.

Run42.2 km
3 laps

Three loops along the Avenida de Las Playas beside the coast. Hot, exposed and in full sun, so this is a heat and hydration problem long before it is a running one.

Not yet confirmed for this edition: bike elevation gain, cut-off times, aid station spacing, course maps (no official GPX published). We publish these only once they are on the official course page, so check there before you pace off anything here.

Questions, answered

When is IRONMAN Lanzarote 2027?

IRONMAN Lanzarote takes place on 15 May 2027.

What distances can I race at IRONMAN Lanzarote?

Full (iron distance). Pick the distance that fits your training runway, not your ego: the right distance is the one you can arrive at fresh.

How hard is the course?

Road terrain, hilly profile with around 2550m of climbing. The wind is the real climb

What is the swim like?

Atlantic off Puerto del Carmen, two laps. Wetsuit-legal, usually 19-21°C. Practise open water before race week, not during it.

How long do I need to train for it?

Race day is 15 May 2027. For the full distance, a proper recovery-led build wants about 20 weeks, which means starting around 26 December 2026. Later starts still work: the block compresses honestly rather than pretending, and it always anchors to the exact race date.
