45 weeks to race day: base season

Plenty of runway. This far out, the win is a boring, consistent base rhythm: aerobic volume, strength, technique. The structured block starts closer in; what you do now decides how high it can climb.

Fix the nervous system first. Sleep, HRV, and the noise out.

Minimum effective dose. The right sessions, done fresh.

Race-week protocol, pacing, contingency. Nothing new on race day.

Building for this one? Ironman training plan covers the sessions, the weekly shape and how the block is paced. The R.A.C.E. Framework explains why it is built that way.

Road to Race

Build my complete road.

Commit to the date and the work gets a shape: your countdown starts, the emails arrive in step with your build, and the app anchors a recovery-led block so the final week lands exactly on race day.

One confirmation email, then the road begins. Registering for the race itself stays with the organiser.

Already have the app, or want it? The app takes this race and builds the block around it.
Abraham Spring, founder of Unbroken

“Half a million spectators and a finish on the Romerberg. The bike is rolling rather than brutal, so this is a genuine chance at a fast day if you pace the climbs honestly.”

The race

Frankfurt has been the European Championship since 2005 and it shows in the production and the depth of field. The swim is a clean lake start. The bike rolls through the Taunus foothills with a set of short sharp climbs, including the famous Hell, that arrive late enough to punish anyone who overcooked the first lap. The run is four flat laps along the Main with a finish on the Romerberg in front of the biggest crowd in European long course racing.

What training changes

Prioritise steady race-position power, repeatable fuelling and an intentionally restrained opening run pace.

The course

Swim3.8 km

Two laps of the Langener Waldsee, a lake inside the city forest, split by a short Australian exit. You run out onto the sand and straight back in, which spikes your heart rate at exactly the point most people are already breathing too hard. Rehearse it before race day.

No course map

IRONMAN publishes no route file for this leg, so there is no course map to draw from.

Two rolling loops mixing fast flat sections with real climbs, out through the villages and back towards the Mainhattan skyline. Rolling rather than brutal, which makes it a fast day if you pace the hills honestly and a very long one if you do not.

Run42.2 km

No course map

IRONMAN's route file for this leg measures 21km against a 42km course. It is not this course. We would rather show no map than a wrong one.

Four flat laps along the banks of the Main under the skyline, finishing at the Römer. One of the most spectator-dense marathons in the calendar, which is a gift at 30km and a trap at 5km, because the noise will happily carry you out at a pace you cannot hold.
